An open letter from Lo-Max Records:
I am sorry to inform you that our dear friend, the legendary singer songwriter Grant McLennan of The Go-Betweens, passed away this weekend. Thousands of tributes have been pouring in from all over the world, including obituaries in the Independent yesterday and The Times today. The Queensland Government Minister made a statement in the Australian Parliament yesterday in his honour. Grant died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack in his sleep on Saturday 6th May.
It was an honour to work with such a talented man whose songs influenced a generation of musicians such as U2, REM, Teenage Fanclub, Belle and Sebastian, Coldplay, The Wrens, Primal Scream and many more.
Grant was a softly spoken, polite and gentle man who loved literature, music and art. It is a tragedy that he has been taken away from us at such a young age and at the peak of his career. He will be missed by all of us here at LO-MAX.
My heartfelt condolences go out to all his family, friends and fans all over the world who knew and loved him like we did. In particular my thoughts and deepest sympathy go out to lifelong musical collaborator Robert Forster, band members Adele Pickvance and Glenn Thompson, his managers and label colleagues Bob Johnson, Bernard Galbally, Bernard MacMahon and Jonathan Turner.
